As has been stated on numerous occasions over the past number of days, Brian Mullins’ influence on Dublin football extends far beyond titles and personal accolades.

However, given his status in the game, it’s hardly surprising that he picked up a raft of medals along the way, with his intercounty emergence in 1974 yielding the first of four All-Ireland senior titles following their 0-14 to 1-6 win over Galway.

By that point, Mullins had picked up a Leinster U-21 winner’s medal when defeating Wexford in the final and he was eligible the following year as Dublin retained their title when defeating Laois before losing to Kerry in the subsequent national decider.

Losing to the Kingdom was a feature of 1975 for Mullins, as the Dubs were dethroned in the final by 2-12 to 0-11, which was the start of an all-consuming rivalry for the ensuing four years.

Revenge arrived in the final a year later as Dublin, who had earlier provided Mullins with his first National Football League winner’s medal, defeated Kerry by 3-8 to 0-10, with Mullins firing home their third goal.

A first All-Star award duly arrived and it was little surprise when he collected his third All-Ireland medal in 1977, as Dublin eased past Armagh by 5-12 to 3-6 in a one-sided final, having overcome Kerry at the semi-final stage.

The Dubs suffered final losses to Kerry in the following two years, with Mullins picking up his sixth provincial medal as scant consolation.

A horrific car crash in 1980 threatened to end his career prematurely but Mullins was back to his formidable best in 1983 and after beating the then All-Ireland champions Offaly to secure his seventh Delaney Cup, a fourth All-Ireland medal arrived as 12-man Dublin edged Galway by 1-10 to 1-8 in their infamous decider.

Away from the Dubs, Mullins won five Dublin Senior Football Championships with his beloved St Vincent’s, the first arriving in 1972 and the last coming twelve years later as they beat near neighbours Na Fianna in the final.

Mullins claimed three provincial titles during that period. beating The Downs (Westmeath), St Joseph’s (Laois) and Tinahely (Wicklow), with his only All-Ireland club medal coming in 1975 as Vinnies overcame Roscommon Gaels by 4-10 to 0-5.
