Cloonan ends Galway hoodoo
Galway 1-14 Tipperary 0-15 All-Ireland SHC Quarter-Final
Having not won a major championship game for seven years, Galway finally ended the misery by edging past Tipperary.
Eugene Cloonan fired over the clinching point late on but it was his 14th-minute goal that proved decisive.
Cloonan would go on the score an impressive 1-4 but Joe Rabbitte's contribution was also telling as he repeatedly asked questions of the Tipp defence.
Michael Crimmins had to pull off a fine save to deny a 30-yard Brendan Cummins free late on as Galway advanced to the last four for the first time in three seasons.
Offaly were pushed close for long periods of their quarter-final clash against Derry but they had enough to set up a last four meeting with Cork.
Johnny Dooley fired over 12 points for Offaly while Brendan Murphy hit the back of the net twice to break Derry hearts.
Michael Collins' penalty did reduce the deficit to four points in the 45th minute and shortly after, Geoffrey McGonigle gave Derry real hope of causing an upset but led by the imperious Dooley, Offaly pulled away in the closing stages.
