DIT have caused a major upset be defeating Sigerson Cup favourites DCU by 1-11 to 0-9 at Athlone IT.

Bernard Allen's 51st minute goal was the crucial score of the game which the 7/2 pre-game outsiders never looked like losing.

Mayo's Aidan O'Shea and David Givney of Cavan exerted control at midfield for the winners while Mayo's Jason Doherty eclipsed DCU's Michael Murphy with six crucial points.

DIT were four points to the good at the break thanks to five points (four frees) for Jason Doherty, a brace of points for David Givney and point for Ross Sheridan. All DCUs points from Murphy frees and the trailed 0-8 to 0-4.

DCU emerged for the second-half in determined fashion with Murphy helping them reduce the margin to only two points, 0-9 to 0-7, by the 44th minute.

But that was as good as it got for the favourites and Allen's goal, scored not long after being introduced as a substitute, guaranteed a final berth for DIT.
