Tyrrellspass trio risk rocking Lake boat
Westmeath's preparations for their All-Ireland qualifier against Kerry in Mullingar on Sunday have been hit by the decision of three Tyrrellspass players to play a club league match on Tuesday night against the county management's wishes.
Denis Glennon, Ger Egan and goalkeeper Darren Quinn -- who has replaced Gary Connaughton as the former captain recovers from a broken ankle sustained during his brief time in Boston -- all lined out for Tyrrellspass in the match against Mullingar Shamrocks just five days before the arrival of the 2009 All-Ireland champions.
The match was played at Springfield, the home of Mullingar Shamrocks, just around the corner from Cusack Park, where the Westmeath team were training at the same time.
None of the Shamrocks players attached to the county team took part in the match.
It is understood that David Gavin and Denis Coroon were at the county training session, but were released to go down to their home ground when word filtered through about the Tyrrellspass move. By the time they arrived, the match had started and they were not used.
The move by the Tyrrellspass players has not gone down well in the county and leaves the Westmeath management in a dilemma as to whether or not to play them against Kerry on Sunday. Their goalkeeping resources are already well stretched, while Glennon is always pivotal to the attack.
Westmeath officials have confirmed that the players were not given permission by the team management to play the game.
Lake County manager Pat Flanagan -- himself a former Tyrrellspass boss -- was not at training on Tuesday night for personal reasons.
Meanwhile, Callum McCormack has been rewarded for his supersub display for Westmeath against Louth with a starting role in Sunday's clash.
The Maryland youngster hit 1-3 when sprung from the bench in the Louth game and replaces James Dolan in the only change to the side.
Kieran Gavin remains out through injury with John Gaffey continuing at full-back.
