Tynan steps up to plate as Tipp ride luck on glory trail

Tipperary's quest for a third consecutive provincial title at this grade remains on track following a deserved semi-final victory over Cork at Semple Stadium in Thurles.

However, they were left hanging on deep in injury-time, with only the post preventing Michael Hurley from bringing the game to extra-time.

Tipperary made the brighter start, but Cork punished the home side's early wastefulness, with wing-back Sean White opening the scoring.

However, it proved to be the Rebels' only point of the half.

Tipperary dominated possession, with Colin O'Riordan to the fore at midfield, but eight first-half wides stopped them from making it count on the scoreboard. Alan Tynan assumed the free-taking duties after a number of early misses, converting three.

It took Tipp until the final minute of the half to score from play. It came from Paul Maher, with Tynan following soon after to give them a four-point lead at the break.

Their advantage was stretched to seven by the 40th minute – with points from Liam Casey, and two more from Tynan – before Cork finally found their rhythm, with points from Michael Cahalane and Aidan Moynihan closing the gap.

Cork's endeavour was to prove fruitless as a second Maher point and a seventh from the excellent Tynan gave Tipperary the cushion they needed to hold on, which forced the unfortunate Rebels to go for goal late in the game.
