Tallon's early strike crucial to St Patrick's final advance

An early goal proved decisive as last year's beaten finalists St Patrick's battled their way through to another decider with a gripping replay win over St Colman's.

Danny Tallon hit the net after just three minutes at Dunmoyle to lay solid foundations for a determined push to the finish line and a clash with first-timers St Paul's, Bessbrook on March 18.

Dara Noonan pulled back a couple of points as the Newry recovery got under way, with Jamie Curran and Eamon Grant giving them a vital edge in midfield.

Jack Haughey brought Newry level from a free in the 14th minute, but Peter Cassidy managed to lift his game in the Maghera engine-room and helped them push three points clear, hitting a fine point and contributing to scores for Gerald Bradley and Tallon.

Haughey's fourth converted free narrowed the gap in stoppage- time and, at the break, it was St Patrick's who led by 1-5 to 0-6.

St Colman's were offered a way back into the game in the 49th minute when goalkeeper Ciaran McCloy needlessly conceded a penalty, hauling down Curtis Sands as the ball floated wide.

However, Noonan's kick flew over the bar and a glorious opportunity was lost.
