Tactical times for football

THE above graphic, which shows the huge spaces left in the attacking sides of the pitch, illustrates the methodical thinking behind the approach of Kildare and Donegal this season.

Neither Kieran McGeeney nor Jim McGuinness leave much to chance when it comes to the tactical niceties of Gaelic football.

Both products of the Ulster school of blanket defence, the two managers put the emphasis on not conceding.

Today, the midfield area could be a ghost town, but that could give chances to the likes of Donegal's Karol Lacey (above left) and James Kavanagh of Kildare (above right) to shine.
