Sub Smithers hits brace for Carlow

Carlow 2-17 Westmeath 1-16

HALF-TIME substitutes Ross Smithers and Mark Brennan made a huge impact at Dr Cullen Park yesterday, scoring a combined 2-4 from play, as Carlow maintained their 100pc league record.

After a tight first half, which saw Carlow's Marty Kavanagh sent off for a second yellow card, the sides were tied at 0-7 each. But in the opening minutes of the second half, Carlow struck vital scores, including a Ross Smithers' goal.

After 53 minutes, the Barrowsiders held a commanding 1-15 to 0-9 lead. But Westmeath rallied strongly and a goal from Brendan Murtagh in the final minutes gave Carlow a scare. But they survived to secure top spot.
