Strogen saves day to end Mayo drought

Mayo bridged a seven-year gap by defeating holders Leitrim in a well-contested final at the Centre of Excellence in Ballyhaunis.

The hosts reigned supreme in the first half and some good points from Liam Irwin (two), Diarmuid O'Connor and Conor Finnerty put them ahead.

But a 0-4 to 0-1 lead looked insufficient, and when Leitrim got back within a point with 15 minutes left and the breeze behind them, things looked ominous for the home side.

Yet Mayo dug deep, with Joe Geraghty outstanding in defence. Yet it took a terrific save from Shane Strogen to deny Leitrim a winning goal when he stopped Conor Walsh's effort from point-blank range.
