St Pat’s maintain Cup stranglehold

St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra have become the team to beat in this competition and a convincing display on Saturday ensured afourth title in nine years.

The victory at Belfield never looked in doubt for the northside students, but Waterford will rue some wayward shooting.

Pat’s hit 1-4 to WIT’s single point in the first 25 minutes and it looked like there was only one name on the cup from that juncture.

The goal came courtesy of centreforward Sean Denvir who rattled the stanchion with a cracking 11thminute strike. Declan McKiernan then hit a superb point to strengthen St Pat’s lead .

WIT continued to drop too many shots short with the St Pat’s defence commanding, particularly in the half-back line with Danny McCann and Colin Lynch sweeping up all manner of loose ball.

Despite a brief second-half rally, Frank Clune’s 42nd-minute goal made sure there was no way back for WIT.
