St Brigid's second favourites tag a mystery

Marin Breheny

ALL-IRELAND senior club football champions St Brigid's (Roscommon) recorded their ninth successive win in the Connacht championship last Sunday when easily beating Tourlestrane (Sligo) in the quarter-final, thus maintaining their pursuit of a provincial four-in-row.

And since they will be well fancied to beat St Mary's (Leitrim) in their semi-final, it's somewhat surprising to see them as second favourites (5/4) behind Galway champions Corofin (10/11) to take the title, especially since the Galway champions have to play Castlebar in the other semi-final.

One suspects that the good folks around Kiltoom and Cam won't be too impressed to see their high-achieving side ranked behind Corofin in either the Connacht or All-Ireland odds.

Two of St Brigid's hardiest annuals – Frankie Dolan and Shane Curran – continue to impose themselves impressively on the success story, with Dolan scoring 1-3 against Tourlestrane last Sunday and Curran making a wonderful save late on.

Their race is far from run.
