Rebels hex a sickener for McCartan

HAVE Cork footballers set a record? Their win over Down, albeit rather luckily thanks to a goal by Ciaran Sheehan (right) with the last kick of the game last Sunday, was their fifth straight win over the Mourne men in four seasons, starting with the 2010 All-Ireland final success.

Nothing especially remarkable about that, but Cork's scoring return in their last four wins against Down (2011, 2012, and 2013 National League encounters, plus 2011 All-Ireland qualifier) reached the massive total of 12-60, an average of 3-15 per game.

That's an astonishing haul over four successive games against a team in the same division – indeed it may well be a first.

Who would have thought when Down led Cork by five points coming up to the half-hour mark in the 2010 All-Ireland final that over the next 323 minutes of action between them the score would read: Cork 12-74, Down 1-64. Truly, James McCartan must be sick of the Rebel red.
