Quigley strike revives Laois' promotion bid

Laois put themselves back in the promotion race after defeating relegation-threatened Sligo at Markievicz Park.

Brendan Quigley's goal just before the break revived the Laois challenge and a much-improved second-half display by Justin McNulty's charges saw them pick up their first win in three games.

Sligo, meanwhile, are placed precariously above the bottom two -- Meath and Antrim -- and need both bottom sides to lose next Sunday to avoid the drop if they fail to get a result against Kildare.

Adrian Marren's second goal, which put Sligo 2-5 to 1-6 up eight minutes into the second-half, hinted that the home side would push on. But three unanswered points from the visitors -- wing-back Darren Strong landing a mighty score -- swung it Laois' way.

For the last 20 minutes Sligo ran out of attacking ideas as Laois added further fine scores from John O'Loughlin, Darren Strong and the impressive Michael John Tierney.

A scrappy opening half, in which Michael John Tierney shone with three fine points from play, ended 1-5 apiece, as Laois midfielder Quigley's close-range finish -- from Gary Kavanagh's assist -- brought parity for the visitors on the stroke of half-time.

This goal also took the sting out of Sligo's surge which begun when Adrian Marren converted a 29th-minute penalty after full-forward Eamonn O'Hara was tripped.
