Provinces in rapid decline

John Greene

Almost two months after the football championship began, the last team -- Mayo -- finally enters the fray this afternoon.

In that time Longford and Meath have played three games -- albeit in part due to replays. This just highlights the fact that, more and more, the GAA's provincial championships are beginning to look outdated, and especially so in Munster and Connacht.

This point will be hammered home even further if Munster revert to a seeded draw to keep Cork and Kerry apart until the final. If that happens, it means all pretence that it is a 'championship' is being abandoned.
