DESPITE fielding a team lacking in inter-county experience, Cork easily accounted for Waterford IT at Pairc Ui Rinn yesterday.
With almost all of the panel that won the All-Ireland last September absent as the game clashed with the team holiday to South Africa -- Alan O'Connor and Kevin MacMahon aside -- the scratch team assembled by selector Terry O'Neill was never really troubled by their college opponents.
Cork led from the off thanks to two points from Tom O'Neill -- brother of Pearse -- and when Jason Sexton added another, a rout looked to be in prospect. WIT found some rhythm, however, and Colm Coss and Emmet Malone got them off the mark before Adam Brophy's point cut the lead to two points, 0-5 to 0-3.
That would be the closest that the students would come, though, and at half-time Cork led 0-8 to 0-4. Ten unanswered points at the start of the second half ensured that there was only going to be one outcome.
WIT simply couldn't cope with the increase in intensity. Wing-back AJ O'Connor converted an excellent effort after a nice team move and sub Daniel O'Donovan also scored a fine point.
Another replacement, Mark Cronin, scored four in as many minutes after he came on and as the last 10 minutes dawned, the only question was as to how much Cork would win by.
In the event, they tailed off slightly as the final whistle approached. WIT left half-back Chris O'Connor finally ending his side's drought with a late free, but Goold cancelled that out with his fifth point to leave 14 points between the sides at the finish.
