One more for the road
IT IS only a fortnight since we heard that this government is determined to bring an end to sponsorship of sports in Ireland by drinks companies by introducing an outright ban. Although the ban is likely to be phased in over a number of years to allow existing deals to work themselves out, its introduction appears inevitable.
Naturally, at a time when sponsorship revenue is declining, many sports bodies are opposed to this move -- rugby and soccer chiefs have already spoken out strongly against the implications of such a ban, as have bodies like the Irish Sports Council which has warned of the impact it will have on grassroots participation.
Whatever your opinion on the merits or otherwise of the proposal, though, it is difficult to accept that a Brian Cowen-led government has the authority to take the high moral ground on alcohol awareness, especially after last week's adventures in Galway.
