O'Connor bags brace from the bench to see off brave Cavan

Donegal 3-13 Cavan 1-13
ULSTER VS FOOTBALL FINAL

Darach O'Connor, son of former Roscommon star John, came on in the final quarter at Enniskillen and turned the game completely on its head as Donegal retained their title.

O'Connor, who has been called into the Donegal senior panel, scored two brilliant goals after setting one up for Jamie Brennan and also weighed in with two quality points.

Donegal were the better side in the first half and led by four points at the interval, 0-8 to 0-4.

Cavan 'keeper Keelan O'Connell produced an outstanding save to deny Conor Doherty early on but three points from John Campbell helped Donegal pull clear.

David McCarron increased Donegal's lead on the restart but Cavan responded with scores from Conor Bradley, Eoin Sommerville and Evan Doughty to reduce the deficit to two. That's when O'Connor came on and with his first touch he set up Brennan for a goal.

Donegal then lost Christian Bonner to a second yellow card and Bradley and Noel Lynch closed the gap for Cavan. With seven minutes to go, however, O'Connor found the net and he then added two points either side of a Sommerville score.

Cavan kept battling away and, with three minutes to go, substitute Sean Keating punched in a goal. In the next attack, though, O'Connor sealed the title when he outpaced the defence to finish low to the net.

GALWAY MAKE €50K LOSS DESPITE CUT IN EXPENDITURE

A disappointing year on the playing field for Galway football has been matched off it, with the county again recording a financial loss for its activities.

Galway Football Committee delegates will tonight hear that a loss of over €50,000 was incurred during the year, even though expenditure fell by that amount.

Last year the football committee suffered a loss of €46,262 with income of €754,939 being surpassed by expenditure of €801,201.

This year the expenditure has been reduced to €750,363 but income also fell, with €696,027 being raised during the season.

A reduction in fundraising and an increase in the cost of maintaining the training centre for county teams in Loughgeorge accounted for the loss in 2013.
