O'Brien dismissal costly

Cavan put a shaky opening quarter behind them to notch their first win in the competition at the expense of a fitful QUB side.

The students deservedly led by 0-4 to 0-1 after 12 minutes, but the early dismissal of Joe O'Brien proved ominous for Queen's and Cavan hit five points without reply to lead by 0-6 to 0-4 at the interval.

The hosts then hit three successive points to extend their lead to 0-9 to 0-4 by the 46th minute. A goal from a 21 metre free by Niall McKenna (Tyrone) six minutes later gave Queen's a lift, but Cavan finished strongly with three unanswered points to seal the spoils.
