AT THE other end of the scale was Phillip Butler (20), the baby of the team and its only London-born starter.

A party of 20 of the corner-back's English family were travelling over for the game; a large crew of his Cork relatives were also coming up.

His father Philip is a Londoner but his mum Judy is from Knocknaheeny in Cork city.

A sports therapy student in Hertfordshire, Butler was applying his expertise to the trip by travelling over wearing the knee-high compression socks.

He got into GAA through a school friend but also still plays rugby (at scrum-half).

No sooner had the Mayo plane touched down in Knock than his team-mates started slagging him about how instantaneously his Irish accent had improved.

Imagine the ribbing they gave him when he revealed in one of this summer's match programmes that his confirmation name is 'Norbert'!
