Mulvany's magnificent seven helps Cavan stroll past Derry

Cavan 1-13 , Derry 0-6

CAVAN will face neighbours Monaghan for a place in the decider after easily overcoming the challenge of Derry in the Ulster U-18 Vocational Schools quarter-final at Middletown yesterday afternoon.

The Breffni lads were the superior team throughout and they were well on their way to victory when leading by eight points at half-time.

Full-forward Kevin Mulvany kicked half a dozen points -- in a day which saw him finish with 0-7 -- while Paddy Smith got a last-minute goal as they established a 1-8 to 0-3 interval lead.

Michael Argue then took his personal haul to four, with Mulvany on target again, as Cavan kept their opponents at arm's length and while full-forward Sean O'Rourke scored four of Derry's points, he was ploughing a lone furrow up front.

SCORERS -- Cavan: K Mulvany 0-7, M Argue 0-4, P Smith 1-0, B Carty, G Watters 0-1 each. Derry: S O'Rourke 0-4, J Downey, C Diamond 0-1 each

•Enda McGinley has become the fifth Tyrone player to retire from inter-county football in the past two months. The 31-year-old midfielder, who struggled with injuries in recent years, won All-Ireland senior titles in 2003, 2005 and 2008. He joins Brian Dooher, Brian McGuigan, Philip Jordan and Ciaran Gourley in quitting the Red Hands.
