Mulholland praises Flynn after triumph
Galway boss Alan Mulholland said that he knew after watching Cork's facile Munster final win over Kerry, the Tribesmen would need something special to beat them -- and he felt midfielder Thomas Flynn delivered just that for his team at Cusack Park on Saturday.
Flynn, a minor last year, nullified All Star Aidan Walsh with a breathtaking performance, which included a point after just 12 seconds. "It was one of the most complete performances I've seen," said Mulholland.
"We went to him in training and asked him if he was up to the task of marking Aidan Walsh. He started hopping up and down and said he was -- more importantly he went out there and did it."
Cork manager John Cleary said there was never any danger of his side underestimating Galway in this game. "We knew we faced a big challenge, regardless of anything we did in Munster," he said.
"We are disappointed. On another night more of our lads might have been up to the mark, but we lacked a bit of composure."
Cork seemed poised for victory when they responded to a Michael Boyle point after the restart with four unanswered points to lead by 0-11 to 0-7 with 19 minutes left.
But Flynn rallied Galway in midfield and Mark Hehir hit a brace after Eric Monahan had pointed.
And then the Cork defence was shredded when a fine ball from Hehir saw substitute Adrian Murphy set up Boyle to finish low into the net to seal the victory.
