Monaghan punish Antrim
Monaghan 2-10 Antrim 1-2
Monaghan cantered to victory to book a semi-final clash with either Down or Fermanagh in this low-key curtain-raiser in Clones yesterday.
Antrim failed to score in the second half, as Monaghan romped away, scoring nine points after the break.
It was a much closer contest in the first half. Early goals from Conor McCarthy (third minute) and David McAllister (11th minute) got Monaghan off to a fine start, but they failed to capitalise and didn't score again before the the interval.
Antrim, though, missed a series of chances before they got a major boost late in the half when Eoin Fleming goaled from the penalty spot after Declan Trainor had been brought down, having broken clear of the Monaghan cover.
That made it 2-1 to 1-2 at the break.
Monaghan were on the offensive on the resumption.
Two frees by Padraic Keenan took them four points clear, and by the end of the third quarter they had tagged on four further points from James McElroy, Adam Treanor, Fergal McGeough and McCarthy.
Antrim continued to squander opportunities, and further scores from McAllister, McGeough and Conor Lavelle extended Monaghan's advantage.
