Monaghan ended a 68-year wait for this crown when they defeated Tyrone with a late goal and a point having trailed from the start.

The Farney men had looked as if they would be the nearly men again but they had already defeated Tyrone in the league semi-final and believed they could get revenge. Eventually, they realised their dream.

The Red Hands got off to much the better start, opening up a four-point lead by the fourth minute with strikes from Conor McKenna, Lee Brennan (free), Ronan Nugent and Daire Gallagher before Monaghan got off the mark with a point by Ryan McAnespie in the 11th minute.

Tyrone led at half-time by 1-9 to 2-1, their goal coming from Conor McKenna and Monaghan's brace of maximums coming from Fearghal McMahon and substitute Barry McGinn.

In the second half Tyrone continued to make most of the running, although Monaghan were coming more into the game but finding scores hard to come by. Tyrone enjoyed an eight-point lead entering the final quarter and it looked like they were home and dry.

However, Monaghan had other ideas and in a scintillating final quarter they turned it around spectacularly. A goal and three points between the 18th and 26th minutes had the margin down to two points and the game was suddenly there for the taking.

Just on the half-hour mark Monaghan took the lead for the first time when McMahon converted a penalty after he had been fouled; the final point of the game by substitute Donal Meegan a minute into stoppage-time wrapped up the victory.
