McKeon finds little extra for Longford
Longford 1-13 Laois 1-12
Longford booked their place in the semi-finals with a one-point, extra-time win over Laois last night.
Laois got off to a dream start with a goal from Martin Scully to help them into a 1-1 to 0-0 lead after six minutes. With the wind, Laois were dominating the scoring, and three points from captain Evan Costello helped them into a 1-4 to 0-2 lead.
Longford were struggling and it took a stroke of luck to get them back in it. Patrick Kiernan's shot was saved by Graham Brody, but Liam Connerton netted the rebound. That left two in it at half-time, 1-5 to 0-3.
Laois started the second half with three points in a row to send them five clear. They should have pushed on, but Longford fought back.
They hit the next seven points in a row, as full-forward Robbie Smyth took control of proceedings when scoring five of these and they led by two going into the last few minutes. Laois came back, though and a Costello point in injury-time forced an extra 20 minutes.
The game was equally close throughout extra-time, but two Barry McKeon points swung it in Longford's favour as they won by just one in the end.
