McGrath set for Waterford selector's role as Mullane returns

KEN McGrath will be involved with Waterford hurlers tomorrow after being parachuted into their management team in a dramatic bid to get the Decies back on track.

The Waterford executive committee held a meeting last night, have convened a full board meeting for Monday and will be forwarding McGrath's name for ratification. He has been brought in as an immediate replacement for selector Nicky Cashin who stood down earlier this week.

And even though McGrath is unlikely to be in the dug-out this weekend, the three-time All Star is still expected to be involved. It is only a year since he retired from the county game but Waterford have turned to him in the hope he can help turn around a season that has seen them lose three in-a-row under Michael Ryan's new management team.

Injuries and absentees have played some part in their problems to date but they were also boosted by the return to training of John Mullane this week after he took an extended winter break.

Mullane has been named to start against Galway tomorrow.

Tommy Walsh is only among Kilkenny's subs for tomorrow's clash with Cork and they've got four changes from the side that leaked six goals to Dublin but still won.

Willie Phelan gets a league debut at corner-back, Kieran Joyce starts at wing-back, Noel Hickey moves to full-back and Eoin Murphy starts at corner-forward. John Tennyson is included in the subs.

Elsewhere, Dublin footballers have beefed up their defence for tonight's NFL Division 1 clash with Donegal (7.15) in the last of the big 'Spring Series' double-headers in Croke Park. Cian O'Sullivan and Kevin Nolan will make their first 2012 league starts.

Philly McMahon has also been recalled and Johnny Cooper moves to wing-back with Darren Daly, James McCarthy and Craig Dias losing out. With Eoghan O'Gara injured, Tomas Quinn replaces Paul Brogan in the only other change.

Dublin's hurlers have made two changes to face Tipperary. Paul Ryan (hamstring) faces a four to six-week lay-off and Conor McCormack (shoulder) is also out. They are replaced by Alan McCrabbe and Eamon Dillon.

Division 1 football's table-toppers Kerry have rested a lot of big guns for their clash with Laois in the double-header in Killarney.

Kieran Donaghy, Paul Galvin, Marc O Se, Brendan Kealy, Anthony Maher, Peter Crowley and Brian Maguire are all out, Tomas O Se and Jonathon Lyne start at wing-back and Dr Crokes' John Buckley gets his debut at wing-forward.

Jamie Queeney comes in to the Meath team at full-forward for their Division 2 clash with Tyrone. Donnacha Tobin moves to wing-back, Caoimhin King to corner-back and Chris O'Connor loses out.
