McGee keeps cool to secure share of spoils

Sligo 0-13
GMIT 1-10

Second-half substitute Colm McGee's free in stoppage time secured Sligo a draw with GMIT in a low-key at a chilly Quigabar.

Sligo were on the brink of another defeat, with McGee's equaliser their only score of the last 11 minutes.

The game was going the way of the students, despite 14 wides, with Paul Conroy's goal the catalyst for a second-half revival.

In the 11th minute of the second period the midfielder's point attempt dipped and clipped the crossbar on its way into the net past bemused Sligo goalkeeper, Jason Farrell.

The goal brought the deficit back to three points, 0-10 to 1-4, and GMIT outscored Sligo 0-4 to 0-1 over the next nine minutes to draw level, 0-11 to 1-8, with 10 minutes of normal time left.

McGee put Sligo back in front from a Padraig Clarke pass.

Excellent points from Aidan Campbell and goalscorer Conroy set up GMIT for a narrow one-point lead, 1-10 to 0-12, as Sligo wasted a couple of fine opportunities prior to McGee's intervention.

Sligo -- who brought on Eamonn O'Hara for the second-half but were forced to withdraw their talisman with a knee injury after he struck two fine points -- controlled much of the first-half through midfielder Eugene Mullen's industry and three points from impressive newcomer Kieran Finan, who did well at wing-forward.

GMIT were reliant on Stephen Griffin as their main threat -- the full-forward scored four points -- and wing-back Colman Hands was forceful but the students spurned a 15th minute goal chance when Martin Coady's goalbound shot was parried by Sligo net-minder Farrell.

Sligo were denied a goal chance as well when Clarke saw his effort smothered by Donal Dowd after he cut through the GMIT defence.
