McGann points way for Rossies

Roscommon booked their place in the final against either Mayo or Galway by overcoming 14-man Sligo in an entertaining tie at Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada.

They succeeded despite the dismissal of Stephen Henry in the 26th minute for a second yellow-card offence. It came after a period of Roscommon dominance, having scored four points without reply between the 14th and 26th minutes.

Diarmuid Murtagh opened the Rossies' account within 30 seconds, but Cathal Henry equalised with a point from play in the fourth minute.

Sligo took the lead in the eighth minute through another Henry point from play, but that was as good as it got for the Yeats County as Roscommon dominated the remainder of the half to deservedly lead 0-5 to 0-2 at the break.

Ultan Harney extended the Rossies' lead on the resumption with a point from play followed by points from Murtagh and a free from man of the match Diarmuid McGann in the 35th minute that put his side six points ahead.

An excellent individual goal by half-back Kevin McDonnell was added to by a Henry point from play to reduce the margin to just two points.

However, three points without reply by Murtagh (two) and McGann ended the Sligo revival to send the Rossies through to the decider.
