MONAGHAN fielded their strongest team in the competition so far and duly registered their first victory as they proved too strong and too resilient for Jordanstown in Inniskeen yesterday.
Seamus McEnaney called in Vincent Corey, Gary McQuaid and Paul Finlay for this final match and their experience gave Monaghan the vital edge.
UUJ came into the game with an outside chance of going through, but that hope had evaporated soon after half-time, with Hugh McElroy's penalty leaving the Farney men 2-8 to 1-5 ahead.
Darren Hughes raised a green flag to put Monaghan in command, and McElroy's second goal made certain.
