McCormack swoops to secure crown for Emmet Og

Leinster Club SFC

Emmet Og advance to the quarter-finals after they put St Anne's of Wexford to the sword at Pearse Park.

Home advantage always plays a huge factor in the Leinster club championship and this contest at Pearse Park was no exception as the home side quickly used the familiar surroundings to full effect.

County players Michael Quinn and Sean McCormack proved to be very influential for Emmet Og, as was McCormack's brother Joe and first cousin Padraig McCormack, who worked tirelessly in the heart of defence.

Emmet Og grabbed the early initiative and raced into a two-point lead inside the opening 10 minutes. Their net-minder Cillian Burns then saved a goal chance from Liam Og McGovern, but Redmond Barry kept the Wexford side in touch with three points (two frees) over the course of the first-half.

The Longford club engineered a brilliant goal for Paddy Thompson four minutes before the break and they increased their lead directly after the restart, thanks to two quick points from Sean McCormack and Daniel Mimnagh.

The visitors, however, gained parity in the 43rd minute after they bagged two goals in the space of three remarkable minutes.

Substitute Francis Simpson was heavily involved in both goals, fisting the first in the 41st minute, before Cillan Burns blocked his goalbound shot moments later, only for the ball to rebound off full-back Padraig McCormack and end up in the back of the net.

Despite this major setback, Emmet Og refused to allow their parade to be rained on and they replied in the best possible fashion when Sean McCormack struck a spectacular goal in the 46th minute.

No less than five Emmet players were involved in the build-up, before McCormack sent a stunning shot into the bottom left-hand corner to wrap up the game for the Longford outfit.
