UCD, playing with more composure in the dreadful conditions, emerged with a comfortable victory over Wexford in this O'Byrne Cup clash played at rainswept St Patrick's Park, Enniscorthy.

The Dublin college controlled the opening 10 minutes, at the end of which they led 1-3 to 0-1, with Ross Bergin firing home their goal from close-range after 10 minutes.

The home side were struggling to get into the game, only managing two first-half points through Ciaran Lyng, which left them trailing 1-5 to 0-2 at the interval.

With Wexford unable to make any real impression in attack, UCD continued to control the pattern of play and with Conor Downey kicking over three points followed by a Liam Connerton 53rd-minute goal they moved into a 2-8 to 0-3 lead.

Wexford, fielding a much changed outfit from that which defeated Laois, came much more into the game during the closing 15 minutes.

Two goals in four minutes from Lyng, after 55 and 59 minutes, reduced the deficit to 2-8 to 2-3.

Points from Bergin and Shane McEntee restored the UCD control, and although Wexford finished with another Lyng goal in the closing minutes, it was too late to affect the result.
