Longford cruised to victory over a lifeless Cavan side to reignite their season and set themselves up for what could be an extended run through the qualifiers.
Following their near miss against Laois, when they shot 16 wides, Longford brought their shooting boots to Breffni Park last night as they missed the target just seven times -- in the first ever Championship clash of these neighbours.
Cavan led by 0-7 to 0-6 at the break, and although they extended the advantage briefly through Niall McDermott, Longford were soon in control, Sean McCormack slotting over a couple of frees before Paul Barden rattled the net in the 49th minute.
When substitute Michael Brennan converted a '45' in the 62nd minute, Cavan had trimmed the deficit to four points, but Gareth Smith's second yellow card and Brian Kavanagh's superb volleyed goal ended any hopes of a comeback.
Cavan finished with 13 men when David Givney picked up his second yellow in the dying moments.
