Lilywhites show extra reserves

Kildare 2-17 Longford 2-13 (AFTER EXTRA-TIME) Leinster MFC

Reigning champions Kildare left it late to overcome the challenge of Longford during extra-time at Pearse Park.

In an exhilarating contest, the Lilywhites needed extra-time after Longford's Shane Kenny equalised late on.

The home side grabbed the perfect start as full-forward Aiden McElligott sliced through and rattled the net.

The game was held up for almost 20 minutes when Enda Macken and Conor Hartley collided heavily in a mid-air tackle – both were transferred to Mullingar General Hospital with head injuries – but Kildare found their groove after a goal from impressive substitute Con Kavanagh, and a series of well-taken points put them ahead at the break.

A second goal from McElligott and a brace of points from Kenny put Longford ahead but Kildare took the spoils in extra-time thanks to a brilliant goal from another sub, Michael Kelly.
