Lethal Loughran saves Tyrone champions' blushes

CARRICKMORE 0-12 ST GALL'S 1-9 Ulster Club SFC quarter-final CARRICKMORE captain Peter Loughran saved the Tyrone champions' blushes when he converted two late frees to rescue them from defeat in yesterday's Ulster quarter-final at Omagh.

Antrim champions St Gall's had battled back from 0-8 to 1-1 behind and looked to be on the cusp of a famous victory until Loughran's late points earned Carrickmore a replay at Casement Park next Sunday.

St Gall's couldn't have wished for a better start, a Ciarán Gallagher goal after just 40 seconds and a Karl Stewart point easing them into a four-point lead. However, Carrickmore reeled off the next eight points without reply, with Kevin McNally, in for the suspended Gabriel McCallan, hitting three.

By the 23rd minute, Carrickmore led by 0-8 to 1-1, but frees from Sean Burns and Stewart saw the lead cut to 0-8 to 1-3 by half-time.

St Gall's dominated the third quarter and a succession of scores, including two excellent Mark McCrory points, had the Tyrone men reeling. Carrickmore only managed one point during the opening 28 minutes of the second half, but somehow managed to pull the game out of the fire in the dying minutes.
