Late Mulhall drive seals it for Carlow IT

Carlow IT 0-12 Wexford 0-10

TWO late points helped Carlow IT fashion a surprise victory over Wexford in the O'Byrne Cup at Bunclody last night.

It was an experimental Wexford side, but they will be disappointed at having gone down to their second successive defeat.

Very little separated the teams through the opening quarter, at the end of which they were level at 0-3 each, but it was the college side who finished the half stronger, with points from Wexford inter-county star Ben Brosnan and Brian Hurley helping them to a 0-6 to 0-5 lead at the interval.

Wexford dominated the opening 10 minutes on the resumption with points from Paddy Byrne, Kevin O'Grady and Adrian Flynn to lead 0-9 to 0-7, but Carlow IT stepped up their game and got back level with points from Fergal Conway and Hurley.

Wexford were unable to turn their late possession into scores and it was Carlow IT – well beaten by Kildare last Sunday – who finished stronger, adding points through Cian Reynolds and Darragh Mulhall to fashion a deserved two-point success.

• Last night's O'Byrne Cup game between Meath and Louth at Pairc Tailteann was called off because of fog. It has been re-scheduled for tonight with a 7.30 throw-in.
