Kingdom wait on Gooch

KERRY boss Jack O'Connor faces an anxious wait before learning whether Colm 'Gooch' Cooper will be fit to line out in the Munster Championship opener against Tipperary.

After being forced off with an eye injury in the Kingdom's final league game against Monaghan 12 days ago, Cooper underwent eye surgery in Dublin last week.

Initial reports suggested that the injury would only rule out the Dr Crokes clubman for a couple of weeks and that he would have no problem making the clash against the Premier County at Semple Stadium on May 16.

But according to team selector Ger O'Keeffe, the situation is not as straightforward as was first mentioned in some media reports. "Colm is due to return to see his specialist in Dublin next week for a review on the condition of his eye," he explained. "And he will then be told when it will be safe for him to make a return to playing football. We'll be keeping our fingers crossed that Colm will be able to play against Tipp."
