Hughes' flight of fancy bet
Aer Arann's flight RE4001, which carried London's footballers from Southend to Knock on Saturday, also included a passenger with some special London football memories.
Packie Hughes, from Emyvale, played for his native Monaghan in the 1950s before moving to London in 1960.
He was a member of the Exiles county board when London travelled to Castlebar 38 years ago to make their Connacht championship debut against Mayo on May 25, 1975.
Hughes was also a selector when London famously beat Leitrim in 1977, their only Connacht victory prior to this summer.
But, in Ruislip, all the chat on Friday night was about 'Packie's bet', where he put on £100 at 1,000/1 for a London/Monaghan double – at least, he got half of his wager right.
