Glennon punishes 14-man Wexford
Westmeath maintained their unbeaten run as 14-man Wexford crumbled in the closing 10 minutes at Wexford Park.
The home side had delivered all the positive football up to the 41st-minute dismissal of midfielder Daithi Waters.
Wexford led by two points at the interval, and had moved into a 0-13 to 1-6 lead when Waters was harshly given a straight red card.
The hosts extended their lead through James Holmes, but they could only score two more points in the remaining 27 minutes as Westmeath took control and pulled away.
A Red Barry point had opened the scoring inside 11 seconds, but Westmeath got back level two minutes later through a John Heslin free. Westmeath scored the game's opening goal after eight minutes, with Kieran Martin applying a splendid finish, giving his side a 1-1 to 0-2 lead.
With Ben Brosnan kicking some superb points, aided by Waters in midfield, Wexford led 0-11 to 1-6 at the interval, with points from Denis Glennon and Callum McCormack keeping the midlanders in touch.
Two Brosnan frees extended the home side's lead to four points, and Westmeath had to wait until the 52nd minute for their opening second-half score, a Heslin free.
Westmeath got a break when David Murphy was penalised for a foul on sub Dessie Dolan, Heslin slotting home the penalty on 55 minutes, leaving just the minimum separating the sides, 0-14 to 2-7.
Kieran Martin and Adrian Flynn exchanged points, but with five minutes remaining and Wexford tiring, Dolan put Glennon through for a goal to make it 3-8 to 0-16. Glennon then shot a further goal to put the icing on the cake.
