Gaffney and Lambert rescue Wicklow
Wicklow 1-21 DIT 3-13
Late points from midfielder Niall Gaffney and goalkeeper Robert Lambert got Wicklow over the winning line in their O'Byrne Cup game against DIT at rain-sodden Newtown.
The game was played in a downpour with black cards issued to Wicklow's Dean Healy and DIT's Kevin O'Brien late in the second half.
Wicklow raced into an early 0-6 to 0-1 lead with three of those points scored by the two wing-backs Kevin Murphy and Healy.
DIT got into the match in the second quarter, punishing lapses in the home defence. Corner-forward Bernard Allen hit over five points before wing-back Colin Doyle drilled to the net to bring the sides level at 1-5 to 0-8.
And after Wicklow had reasserted themselves to go back in front, Allen popped up again to hammer home goal number two for DIT, sending the sides in for the break deadlocked at 0-13 to 2-7.
DIT looked to be on their way at the start of the second half as Ciaran Reddin goaled and then added a point, but Wicklow fought their way back to achieve parity thanks to goal by substitute Brendan Kennedy. Then, in a tight finish, Gaffney and Lambert nailed victory for Wicklow.
