Kildare won their third O'Byrne Cup crown in four years with a 1-10 to 0-9 win over near-neighbours Meath in blustery conditions at St Conleth's Park in Newbridge.

Kildare got the ideal start when Paddy Brophy put Tommy Moolick in and he found the net after four minutes.

The Royals shaded the remainder of the half with Stephen Bray proving a real hand-ful.

Late points from Bray and Eamon Wallace could have easily been goals and Mickey Newman had a goalbound effort expertly cleared off the line by Mick Foley.

A Darroch Mulhall free ensured that Kildare went into the break leading by 1-4 to 0-6.

Kildare began the second period with much more purpose and points with either foot from Darroch Mulhall helped them into a three-point lead with 15 minutes remaning.

Meath did manage to create some goal chances but couldn't convert them and man-of-the-match Paul Cribben popped up with the final score to secure a four-point win.

In Carrick-on-Shannon, Leitrim made it back-to back wins the FBD Connacht League with a 2-5 to 1-7 win over Roscommon at Pairc Sean MacDiarmada.

Goals in either half from Aaron Hickey and debutant John Mulligan gave Leitrim another success in the pre-season tournament.

Henry Shefflin scored 0-13 as Kilkenny recorded a 1-24 to 0-15 win over Galway at Freshford in the Walsh Cup.

Galway could only muster three points in the second half when playing against a strong breeze.

In the other Walsh Cup semi-final at Gorey, Dublin beat Wexford by a solitary point on a final scoreline of 1-15 to 1-14.

All-Ireland champions Clare were facile winners over UCC at Sixmilebridge to qualify for the final of the Waterford Crystal Cup.
