Laois school Colaiste Iosagain had to weather a second-half comeback from Marist Athlone before securing victory in this Leinster Colleges 'A' football clash in Portarlington yesterday.
The home side dominated the first half and had built up a six-point lead by the midway point, but were holding on for the last 10 minutes after they were reduced to 14 men.
Points from Eoin Finlay and Rory Galvin helped Colaiste Iosagain into an early lead. Marist threatened occasionally but they were toothless in attack.
It was a different story in the second half, though, with Athlone corner-forward Alan Coffey causing plenty of problems.
It was his marker, John Hyland, who was dismissed for persistent fouling.
Coffey's form deserted him with eight minutes remaining, however, as he dragged a penalty effort wide, but Aaron Curley flicked a long ball to the net a minute later to set up a frantic end to the game.
However, Colaiste Iosagain's defence held firm and a late Finlay free capped a hard-fought three-point win for the Laois boys.
