Fines not real punishment
There's something contradictory about an amateur organisation using fines as a punishment, but it's still a favoured weapon of sanction for the GAA, who have hit Wexford, Longford, Cavan and Fermanagh with €5,000 penalties for incidents at recent All-Ireland qualifier games.
Contradiction apart, fines conceivable are not a real punishment, since counties could cunningly reclaim the money by withholding it from gate receipts collected at National League games, if the were so minded.
Perish the thought that any county would ever consider such a move, but if they were to leave gate receipts from 400 spectators 'resting in their account' during next year's league, it would return €5,200.
We hope we haven't given them a mischievous idea!
