Fennell finds range to fire up Louth

Louth 2-13 Monaghan 0-11

LOUTH set the stage for a top-of-the-table clash against Donegal next weekend with an impressive second-half show in Dundalk.

The home side made the perfect start when Andrew Mackin – a late addition at full-forward – powered a cool finish past Ronan McAteer.

Monaghan rallied well under the commanding influence of Hugh Byrne, and were soon back in front, but Louth boss Pat Clancy would have been delighted to adjourn just three points in arrears, 0-9 to 1-3.

The home side duly wiped out that deficit within three minutes of the restart before an unfortunate own goal by Monaghan 'keeper Ronan McAteer, from a David Dunne centre, put them ahead.

Four points without reply – all Shane Fennell frees – put the issue beyond doubt.

It got worse for Monaghan in the dying minutes as top scorer Byrne was sent off after picking up two yellow cards, triggering his second red in two games.
