An impressive second-half display enabled St Mel's to advance to the second round at The Downs yesterday.
There was very little between the sides in the first half, at the end of which the Carlow lads led by 0-4 to 0-2, having had a lucky break after half an hour when the winners had a 'goal' by Killian Farrell disallowed after the linesman waved back play for a sideline kick.
Farrell went on to excel in the second half, scoring a goal in the 33rd minute and adding four points. St Mel's wasted a number of chances, including a poor strike from a 49th-minute penalty from Ronan McGowan.
However, a fine individual goal from Brian Walsh sealed victory just a minute later.
