Dillon and Madden give Cavan extra edge

Cavan 1-16 Monaghan 1-12 (After extra-time) ULSTER U-21 FC QUARTER-FINAL

Cavan needed extra-time to see off Monaghan at Kingspan Breffni Park and set up a semi-final with Down.

Quality passing lit up the opening quarter, but only Monaghan's Keith McEnaney split the posts from open play as the visitors eased into a 0-4 to 0-2 lead. Cavan won the lion's share of the breaks but, Jack Brady aside, the home forwards lacked conviction.

The first half was notable for the openess of the football and the fact both 'keepers kicked a point apiece from frees off the ground.

As the first half gathered pace, Shane Carey (Monaghan) and Cavan ace Brady were kept particularly busy on freetaking duty. Cavan notched six unanswered points – four from Brady – between the 18th and 27th minutes to take a 0-8 to 0-6 interval lead.

Monaghan edged in front when Carey converted his fourth free, but 90 seconds later he was dismissed for a second yellow card.

Brady fired over yet another free to make it 1-9 apiece in the 58th minute, but three consecutive wides thereafter spoiled Cavan's chances of victory in ordinary time.

Monaghan had their tally of players reinstated, with Liam Hahessy introduced for the start of extra-time, but it was Cavan who proceeded to gallop their way into the winner's enclosure.

Points from impressive subs Joe Dillon and Conor Madden helped seal the issue against a Monaghan team that could only notch three points in the 24 minutes of added time.
