Derry overpower Monaghan
Derry 0-14 Monaghan 0-8
A dominant first-half display saw Derry claim their first two points of the League campaign with a comfortable Division 2 win over Monaghan at Celtic Park last night.
Paddy Bradley kicked their first score after only 30 seconds and points from Mark Lynch, Michael Bateson, Bradley again and Enda Lynn made it 0-5 to no score after 18 minutes.
A Paul Finlay free got Monaghan off the mark but they struggled to make any attacking impact, and three more Bradley points made it 0-8 to 0-1 after 19 minutes.
Skipper Darren Hughes burst forward on the half-hour mark to kick Monaghan's second score of the game but the Farney men were immediately rocked back when Matthew McKenna collected his second yellow card and subsequent red for a dangerous challenge on Barry McGoldrick.
Monaghan did at least grab the next score through Eoin Duffy's close-range free but McGoldrick's long-range effort gave Derry a 0-9 to 0-3 half-time lead.
Monaghan managed a couple of early second-half scores through Tommy Freeman -- making his first inter-county appearance since April of last year -- and another free from Finlay, but Derry were able to maintain their lead.
Points from their half-back line of Bateson, Craig and Sean Leo McGoldrick kept them comfortably in front, despite Neil Forester 's second yellow card.
