Deise wear down weary Leitrim
A strong second-half revival by Waterford, during which they scored seven points without reply, overwhelmed Leitrim in Ballinamore yesterday afternoon.
Waterford dominated the early exchanges, racing into a two-point lead after four minutes. However, Leitrim improved as the half progressed, led by Phillip Howard who scored three points from play.
An added-time pointed free by Brian Wall edged Waterford ahead 0-6 to 0-5 at half-time.
Despite losing Howard to injury, Leitrim started the second half impressively as Waterford struggled, scoring five points without reply between the 41st and the 57th minute, during which their goalkeeper, Gareth Phelan, saved a Waterford penalty effort.
However, for the second week in a row, the Leitrim effort faded as a fitter and stronger-looking Waterford took over in the closing stages of the game to run out deserving winners.
