Deise rally falls short

Westmeath 1-19
Waterford 1-14

A late rally by 14-man Waterford was not enough as Westmeath collected a vital win in Mullingar.

The hosts, with Dessie Dolan on song, led by 0-19 to 0-12 with six minutes left, but Mark Ferncombe's goal gave Waterford hope and then Tommy Prendergast followed up with two points.

Only a fine save by Gary Connaughton from Ferncombe prevented Westmeath from falling behind, before Denis Corroon goaled for the winners.

Waterford full-back Thomas O'Gorman was sent off on a second yellow shortly before the break. Westmeath led at half-time by 0-9 to 0-7 and added five pointsin 10 minutes.
