Conway and Doyle send Good Counsel into raptures

Good Counsel sharpshooters Paraic Conway and Daragh Doyle fired their school to a Leinster title following an exhibition of score-taking in Athy, Kildare.

Marist from Athlone actually led this game by a point with five minutes to go to the half-time break, but Good Counsel carried the momentum garnered from Mark Aylward's 29th-minute goal into the second half and never looked likely to be beaten.

The first 25 minutes had been very close, with Good Counsel two points ahead, but Marist took the lead for the first time when Seamus Byrne converted a penalty after Evan Roarke had been fouled. Their advantage didn't last long, though, and two quickfire points from Conway and Doyle were followed up by a powerful finish from Aylward to put Good Counsel 1-7 to 1-3 ahead at the break.

John Tubritt increased that advantage in the first minute of the second half and the scores began to flow with the play going in just one direction.

Six points in a row followed before Robert Ashe landed Marist's first point of the second half in the 44th minute. Tom Foran and Byrne then swapped points, but Good Counsel were soon back on top and Conway's 52nd-minute goal ensured there was no way back for Marist. Good Counsel also scored the final three points, leaving the gap at the final whistle at 15 points.

Conway and Doyle were ably assisted by Tubritt and midfield duo Conor Purcell and Paudie Barden.
