Change for the better

John Greene

The anticipated square-ball controversy never materialised last weekend -- at least not for those who knew the new rule -- and it seems to me there is less scope now for trouble than before.

It is no more difficult for a referee to figure out if a player was in before the ball was kicked, as opposed to when it arrived. Of course, what the new rule effectively means is that in open play there is no longer a square ball.

And in all the commentary on the change, it has largely been overlooked that the biggest beneficiary will be the club game, which was blighted every week with wrong calls.
