Captain Kavanagh saves Naomh Eoin

Mt Leinster Rangers 1-7, Naomh Eoin 0-10

A LATE Naomh Eoin rally ensured that the Willie O'Connor Cup went unclaimed at the end of yesterday's final at Dr Cullen Park.

The Myshall men battled back from a deficit of three points to force a draw through an injury-time point from a long-range free by captain Dwain Kavanagh.

A crowd of 2,500 watched as Naomh Eoin had the better of the opening quarter, after which they led by 0-4 to 0-1. Rangers slowly gained a foothold, but it took a fine save from their goalkeeper Frank Foley to deny Naomh Eoin full-forward Robbie Foley a goal on 23 minutes.

Five minutes later, the 'keeper travelled the length of the field to net a 28th-minute penalty as Rangers went in at the interval 1-4 to 0-5 ahead. Mount Leinster, fielding four Coady brothers, looked likely winners for most of the second half but the Myshall side displayed great fighting spirit.

With free-taker Brian 'Red' Murphy keeping them in touch, they had their reward with that late leveller as seven minutes of injury-time failed to produce a winner.
